School Council

SCHOOL COUNCIL

School councils are groups that make decisions that set the direction of the school.

School councils:

  • help create and check the school's budget
  • contribute to the school strategic plan
  • make decisions on policies like investments, payments by parents, dress code.

Being a school council member means taking part in shaping the future of the school. Council members attend meetings (usually twice per term on a Monday evening at our school).

There is an annual nomination/election process to become a council member. Elections happen by the end of March each year and all parents and guardians from the school can vote (assuming the number of nominations exceeds the positions vacant).

Council members hold office for 2 years while eligible (for example, only while remaining a parent of an enrolled student or remain a staff member at Seabrook PS).

FAQs

What is a school council and what does it do?
All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally formed bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within centrally provided guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.  The term of office for all members is two years. Half the members must retire each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections.

Why is Parent membership so important?
Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school.

Do I need special experience to be on school council?
No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future.

Can I visit a council meeting?
Yes. Any member of the school community who wishes to attend a school council meeting as an observer is welcome to contact the school office to make arrangements.
